ADA Compliance

Iconic Exterior Signage

After traveling any distance, arriving at a new destination is always a special experience and The Moxy is no exception. One of the most recognizable features of the hotel, regardless of the location (there are 60), is its iconic pink handwritten logo located along the facade. This bold graphic sets the fashionable hotel apart from its more classically appointed counterparts and embodies the playful buzz of downtown NYC.

For the Moxy Downtown, Audrey Signs crafted a large laser cut pink acrylic logo and mounted it atop a custom designed steel bracket. This illuminated handwritten graphic lets visitors know that they’re in for a fun and relaxing time at a hotel that doesn't take itself too seriously.  Studies have even shown that it takes people only seven seconds to form an opinion about a person or business meaning that both beautiful and accurate signage are of the utmost importance for any hotel.

While you may not realize it, nearly every detail of a satisfying check-in experience can be traced back to a clear and concise signage schedule. Each sign at The Moxy was specifically designed by Audrey Signs to move people through the hotel’s space efficiently.

Origin of The Americans with Disabilities Act

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law on July 26, 1990 after it was concluded that there was a need for additional civil rights legislation for persons with disabilities. Ever since, the ADA has protected differently abled individuals from discrimination. Today, the ADA is an "equal opportunity" law for people with disabilities. Noncompliance with this law puts guests' safety at risk and can carry costly penalties of up to $150,000.

What is ADA Compliant Wayfinding?

While meeting ADA requirements may seem overwhelming at first there are essentially three elements that are most important in keeping your hotel ADA compliant.

  • Correct height and placement of the sign.

  • Use of Braille AND tactile letters.

  • Easy to read contrasting colors and fonts.

With over 30 years of experience in the business, the experts at Audrey Signs know all of the ADA requirements in the hospitality industry, so you don’t have to. Keeping these guidelines in mind, Audrey Signs provided a compliant wayfinding solution for The Moxy that kept with the stylish and relaxing vibe the hotel has become known for.

Recognizing ADA Compliance

Once you’re familiar with the basics of ADA requirements, you’ll begin to notice these thoughtful design cues everywhere you go. At The Moxy, you’ll notice the design of these signs is of high contrast and mounted at the appropriate height of 60" above the floor. The room numbers were crafted from silver acrylic with braille and mounted beside each room.

At the Moxy, they wanted something a little different for their Do Not Disturb signs. Rather than the typical flimsy plastic door hangers that you’re used to, The Moxy requested something with a bit more of a tactile look and feel. We created a custom wooden paneled privacy sign that hangs from a small chain, allowing guests to flip the sign as needed.
